Tank vents mount to the ferrule on the manway (lid) on top of the tank. The purpose of the vent is to allow excess gas to escape and not build pressure as the wine in the tank expands. Also the vent will open as the wine cools and contracts. The vent will prevent the tank from deforming under low pressure situations. It is no substitute for opening the lid during wine transfers from the tank. If you do not open the lid and you pump wine out of the tank fast enough, you will collapse the tank like a beer can. The stainless steel tank vents come with a gas port and a fly screen. The less expensive plastic vents do not.
